NORTHERN BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG CLUB

CODE OF ETHICS

This code of ethics is issued as advice to every member of the Northern Bernese Mountain Dog Club.

Members, whether the owner, keeper, or in temporary charge of a dog, for any person,

accept as their responsibility, that they will:-

1)      Properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under their care, and arrange

for appropriate veterinary attention if, and when, required.

2)      Not allow any dog in their care to roam at large, or to cause a nuisance to

neighbours or those carrying out their official duties.

3)      When their dogs are away from home, ensure that the dogs shall wear properly

tagged collars, and shall be kept fully leashed or under effective control.

4)     Acknowledge responsibility to clean up after their dogs in public places or

anywhere where the dogs are being exhibited.

5)     Agree, without reservation, that any Veterinary Surgeon operating on their dogs

to correct hereditary defect(s) may report such an operation(s) to the Kennel

         Club.

6)      (a)  Not to breed from a bitch, which in any way is harmful to the bitch.

(b)    Not use a stud dog on any bitch which is not registered with the Kennel

Club, and/or is not of a suitable quality to breed from.

7)      Breed only from animals that have been both hip and elbow scored through the

BVA/KC scheme, or the equivalent scheme prior to 1998.

8)      Stud dog may serve only bitches qualified under rule 7)

9)      Only sell puppies and older dogs to homes where there is a reasonable

expectation of a happy and healthy life, and will assist with the re-homing of a

dog if the initial circumstances change.

10)    When placing their dogs in a new home, provide details of all dietary

requirements, and supply guidance concerning responsible dog ownership.

Owners of stud dogs have a moral obligation to share the responsibility for

         puppies produced by their dogs.

11)    Not to sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or

directly or indirectly allow dogs to be give as a prize or donation in a contest of

         any kind.

12)    Not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely

advertise dogs, nor mislead any person regarding the quality of the dog.

13)    When selling or transferring a dog to another person, ensure that all relevant

documents are provided to the new owner.
